What is your PURPOSE for the year ahead? What are YOU going to achieve?
Finding your purpose for the year can be an introspective and inspiring process that helps set meaningful goals and directs your actions.
I will admit that 2024 has been one of the most difficult and heart-breaking years of my life! My dad passed away in Jan, I left my job in May, had an emotional breakdown in June, worked in a restaurant managing the stock for 4 months and am now starting up my own business in my passion Herbal Medicine.
I want to help others who may also be going through rough times and heal my own body (I think I am going through perimenopause) so emotional and hormonal ups and DOWNS as well.
Looking at 2025 I quake in my boots; can it be as rough as 2024? I can't tell but I think going in with a plan will help and give me a general path to stick to. I have been reflecting and writing in my journal for the past week using the below questions as guidelines and I may have some semblance of clarity and perspective for the next year.
Working through the below has shown me what I will NOT allow into the next year (manipulation and guilt) and what I want to embrace more of (creativity, beauty, healing and peace).
I hope they can help you too; if you are as anxious as I am...
1. Reflect on the Past Year
- What went well? Think about your achievements, moments of joy, and areas where you grew.
- What challenged you? Identify difficulties you faced and lessons you learned.
- What did you enjoy? Pinpoint activities, people, or situations that brought you the most satisfaction.
2. Define What Matters Most
- Core Values: Write down your core values (e.g., family, creativity, health, personal growth).
- Passions: Identify activities or causes that ignite your enthusiasm and energy.
- Priorities: Decide what areas of your life—relationships, career, health, or spirituality—need more focus this year.
3. Visualize Your Ideal Year
- Imagine what a successful and fulfilling year looks like for you. Ask yourself:
- How do you want to feel by the end of the year?
- What do you want to have accomplished?
- Who do you want to become?
4. Identify a Theme or Focus
- Choose a single word or phrase that captures the essence of your purpose for the year (e.g., "Growth," "Balance," "Connection," "Creativity").
- Let this theme guide your decisions and actions throughout the year.
5. Set Purpose-Driven Goals
- Break down your purpose into actionable goals. Use the SMART framework:
- Specific: Clearly define what you want to achieve.
- Measurable: Set criteria to track progress.
- Achievable: Make goals realistic and attainable.
- Relevant: Align goals with your purpose and values.
- Time-bound: Set deadlines to keep momentum.
6. Explore Through Journaling or Meditation
- Journaling Prompts:
- What do I want to focus on this year?
- What legacy or impact do I want to leave in 2025?
- What habits or actions can bring me closer to my ideal self?
- Meditation: Spend quiet time visualising your ideal year. Listen to your inner voice and gut for clarity on what truly matters.
7. Seek Feedback
- Talk to trusted friends, mentors, or family members who know you well. Ask:
- What do you think I excel at?
- How have I positively impacted others in the past?
- Their insights can offer clues to your unique strengths and potential purpose.
8. Align Purpose with Daily Actions
- Turn your purpose into daily habits or routines. For example:
- If your purpose is "Health," commit to regular exercise and nutritious eating.
- If your purpose is "Connection," schedule regular time with loved ones or network with new people.
9. Stay Flexible
- Purpose can evolve. Allow room for growth and adaptability as the year progresses.
- Regularly reassess your goals and adjust them to stay aligned with your evolving purpose.
10. Trust Your Journey
- Remember that your purpose doesn’t have to be grand or perfect. It could simply be about personal growth, nurturing relationships, or finding joy in small moments.
Example:
If your purpose is "Creativity", your focus could include:
- Learning a new skill (e.g., writing, painting).
- Dedicating time to creative hobbies daily or weekly.
- Sharing your creations to inspire or connect with others.
Discovering your purpose for the year is about clarity and alignment. When your actions resonate with your inner values and passions, the year becomes not just productive, but meaningful.
